The Perfect Pancakes | Tips to Optimise the Nutritional Value of your Pancakes!

Pancake day is just around the corner, and we could not be more excited. To celebrate, we are sharing our top tips that you can use to create the perfect pancakes.

We love pancakes. Not only because of their delicious flavour, but also because of their versatility. Pancakes are made using a blend of flour, milk, and a source of healthy fat. You can also boost your dietary fibre intake by using flours that are higher in fibre content as compared to more conventional ones. Remember: pancakes can be both sweet or savoury!

Here are our 8 top tips to make Pancake Day 2021 your most exciting, flavourful, and nourishing one yet:

1. Cook pancakes with the ‘one-beaker’ rule: one glass of milk, one cup of self-raising flour, and one egg. Beat these 3 ingredients, and mix well in a  beaker. This will allow you to easily tip the batter onto the frying pan.

2. Pancake ingredients can all be swapped like-for-like. Feel free to replace dairy milk with soy and oat drinks, as well as your flour with a gluten-free alternative. Aquafaba or chickpea water work as an excellent replacement to eggs.
3. To keep the oil and fat content down, use spray oil. Cook and flip when bubbles appear.
4.Why not add frozen fruit for a dash of colour and nutrients? If you have any spare overripe bananas, these are a great addition when mashed into the pancake batter to add a hint of natural sweetness!
5. Explore different possible shapes and sizes. Why not try a funny face to brighten your day, or even letters to create a short message using a squirt bottle?
6. Pancakes are associated with breakfast but can be an interesting base to other meals as well. Pancakes work as a great accompaniment to dishes such as stews and all kinds of vegetables.
7. For a savoury take on the pancakes, snip spring onions into the batter, or add grated carrots or cheese to enhance the texture.
8. Have you tried blinis? They are small round pancakes originating from  Russia, and they are often served with smoked salmon, sour cream, and dill.
